What are the minimum requirements to be a firefighter?

Some fire departments require an EMT certification or a Paramedic license to take the test (bare minimum requirements). Some require one or both of those plus a Firefighter I academy or Firefighter I certificate. Some just require you to be 18 years old, have a high school diploma or GED and a valid drivers license. Because each department has their own requirements that they hold to, we recommend you contact the department you want to work for and ask them.

How do I become a firefighter?

What you will need to do is begin reading up on How to Become a Firefighter. There are many publications out there that offer this type of information or you can read our featured article under Become a Firefighter that explains what action you need to take in becoming a firefighter. Second you should start thinking about getting certified as an EMT and perhaps down the line a Paramedic. Then begin taking practice tests to prepare yourself for the Written Exam.

Is there an age requirement to become a firefighter?

Each department has their own age requirements that they hold to and will vary sometimes depending on province requirement. The minimum age is typically 18 years of age, however, the age minimum may be anywhere between 18-21. There may be a maximum age requirement of 35. This is common in some provinces. Because each department has their own age requirement, we recommend you contact the department you want to work for and ask them.
